Valsalva
is the forceful expiration of air with the patient's mouth and nose
held shut. When performed in this fashion, air will be forced into
the
middle ear
cavity and help treat
eustachian tube
dysfunction.
This patient has a large
posterior-superior retraction pocket of the
tympanic membrane. By forcing air in the
middle ear, he is able to
blow out the pocket.
