The picture below shows a stone in the left
Parotid salivary gland duct (Stensen's Duct). The submandibular salivary gland is the most common salivary gland to
form stones. This is because it has a wide duct and a mucoid
saliva which flows up hill. Stones are rare in the
parotid gland since the saliva is serous and the duct flows down hill. Prevention of stone formation
includes plenty of fluids and sialogues, such as a few drops of lemon
juice or a dill pickle.
